Kilimanjaro PACKING LIST

Introduction

Proper gear and packing are essential for a safe and comfortable Kilimanjaro climb. Knowing what to bring and having the right equipment can make all the difference in your journey to the rooftop of Africa. Clothing:

  • Base Layers (2-3 sets): Moisture-wicking long sleeve shirts and pants.
  • Insulating Layers (1-2): Fleece jacket, optional puffy down jacket for extra warmth.
  • Outer Layers: Waterproof and windproof jacket and pants.
  • Headwear: Sun hat, wool or synthetic beanie, buff or neck gaiter for sun and dust protection.
  • Handwear: Lightweight gloves, insulated gloves for summit push.
  • Footwear: Sturdy trekking boots, optional waterproof hiking sandals for camp use, gaiters for wet or snowy conditions.

Gear:

  • Backpack (40-50 liters): Larger than daypack size recommended to accommodate extra layers and packed lunch.
  • Daypack (25-35 liters) with rain cover: For essentials during the day’s hike.
  • Sleeping Bag (rated to -15°C or lower): Consider a colder rating for extra peace of mind at higher altitudes.
  • Trekking Poles: Adjustable and lightweight.
  • Hydration (3 liters minimum): Water bottles and/or hydration bladder. Consider an insulated bottle to keep water from freezing.

Accessories:

  • Headlamp with extra batteries: Essential for low-light situations and camp activities.

  • Sunglasses (UV protection, wraparound style): Protects your eyes from the strong sun at high altitudes.

  • Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher, lip balm with SPF): Essential for sun protection on all areas of exposed skin.

Personal Items:

  • First Aid Kit: Including altitude sickness medication, blister care, pain relievers, personal medications, and insect repellent (optional).
  • Toiletries: Biodegradable soap, quick-drying camp towel or wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products (if applicable).
  • Documentation: Passport, visas, travel insurance documents, cash for tipping and incidentals.

Miscellaneous:

  • High-energy snacks: Nuts, dried fruit, energy bars, and electrolyte tablets to replenish minerals lost through sweat.
