Trek Overview
Ol Doinyo Lengai, known as the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai, is Tanzania’s only active volcano. It stands 2,890 meters tall and is about 240 km from Arusha, near the Kenyan border. The climb takes about 6 hours and offers stunning views of the Great Rift Valley and Ngorongoro Highlands. Since it is an active volcano, climbing is not allowed during eruptions.
At the base of the mountain lies Lake Natron, the world’s most important breeding site for Lesser Flamingos. This shallow soda lake has extreme alkalinity and temperatures over 40°C, protecting the flamingos from predators. The area has a unique, otherworldly landscape, with waterfalls, streams, and breathtaking views, making it a true off-the-beaten-path adventure.
