Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Drive to Lake Natron and Sunset Walk
In the morning, leave Arusha or Moshi for Lake Natron. The journey takes about 5-6 hours, passing through the Great Rift Valley and Maasai villages. Along the way, stop to enjoy beautiful landscapes and take photos. Arrive at Lake Natron in the afternoon and check into your lodge or campsite. After lunch, take a walk along the lake’s shore, where you’ll see thousands of flamingos and the lake’s unusual red waters. As the sun sets, relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Have an early dinner, then rest before the night climb.
Day 2: Midnight Climb and Waterfall Swim
Around midnight, start your climb to Ol Doinyo Lengai, guided by local experts. The trail is steep and covered in volcanic ash and loose rocks, making it a tough but exciting challenge. After 4-5 hours, reach the 2,962-meter (9,718-foot) summit just in time for sunrise. From the top, enjoy stunning views of Lake Natron, the Great Rift Valley, and even Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. If the volcano is active, you may see smoking vents and fresh lava. After taking in the views, begin the 2-3 hour descent. Back at camp, enjoy a well-earned breakfast and some rest. Later, visit the Engaresero Waterfalls, where you can swim and cool off before dinner and another night at camp.
