Best Time to Book Kilimanjaro Climb Packages

You can take on Mount Kilimanjaro at any time of year, but choosing the right season can improve your experience and your chances of reaching the summit. That’s why all our Kilimanjaro Climb Packages are carefully planned around weather patterns and trail conditions to give you the best shot at success.

Best Months to Climb:

  • January to mid-March – Clear skies, warmer temperatures, and good trail conditions

  • June to October – Dry, cool, and the most popular time for Kilimanjaro climbs

These months offer the most reliable weather, fewer muddy trails, and great visibility, perfect for photography and summit views.

Rainy Seasons: More Challenging Conditions

March to May (Long Rains) & November to Early December (Short Rains) – Climbing during these months is more challenging because of heavy rainfall. The trails become muddy and slippery, making the trek more difficult. However, if you don’t mind the rain, this is when you’ll find fewer people on the mountain, and the scenery is lush and beautiful.

Best Months for Fewer Crowds

If you want to avoid the busiest times and enjoy a quieter trek, consider climbing in:

March – Just before the long rains start, offering a balance of decent weather and fewer climbers.
Early June – Right after the rainy season, with fewer crowds before the peak season begins.
Late October – The end of the dry season, when most trekkers have already completed their climbs.

Choosing the right time to climb Kilimanjaro depends on your preferences. If you want the best weather, aim for the dry months. If you prefer solitude and don’t mind some rain, the off-peak seasons could be a great option!

Which Kilimanjaro Route Is Right for You?

Mount Kilimanjaro offers several trekking routes each with its own views, difficulty, and experience. Choosing the right one can make all the difference in how much you enjoy the climb and your chances of reaching the summit. That’s why all our Kilimanjaro Climb Packages are designed around the main routes, giving you options that match your goals, fitness, and schedule.

Here’s a quick guide to the most popular Kilimanjaro routes we offer:

Best for: Beginners, comfort seekers, hut accommodation
The only route with huts instead of tents. It’s the shortest route to the summit, but also has the lowest success rate due to less acclimatization time. Ideal if you prefer a faster climb with basic shelter.

Best for: Great views, solid acclimatization, and a good challenge
This is the most popular route for a reason. It’s scenic, well-paced for acclimatization, and offers a real adventure. Expect forest paths, alpine ridges, and a steady climb to the summit

Best for: Quiet trails, off-the-beaten-path experience
Starting near the Kenyan border, Rongai is less crowded and often drier, especially during the rainy season. It’s ideal if you want a peaceful climb with gentle slopes.

Best for: High success rates, fewer crowds, and amazing scenery
A favorite for photographers and those who want a quieter, more gradual climb. The 8-day version offers great acclimatization and stunning views from day one. Higher summit success rate than other routes.

Best for: Maximum acclimatization, full Kilimanjaro experience
This is the longest route and circles almost the entire mountain. Fewer climbers take this path, but it offers the best acclimatization and great views from all sides.

Best for: Experienced trekkers, steep climbs, fewer crowds
The Umbwe Route is the shortest, steepest, and most direct way up Kilimanjaro. It’s physically demanding and not ideal for first-time trekkers because it offers less time to acclimatize.

Best for: Adventurers starting high, remote landscapes, panoramic views
The Shira Route starts with a drive up to Shira Gate (3,600m), meaning you begin the trek already at high altitude. It quickly joins the Lemosho Route and follows a similar scenic path across the Shira Plateau. Because of the fast gain in elevation early on, it’s best for those who have already acclimatized or have previous altitude experience. Fewer climbers use this route, so it offers a remote and peaceful experience.

Reaching Kilimanjaro’s summit requires a combination of physical fitness, preparation, and the right gear. Here are some key ingredients:

  • Good Physical Fitness: Train your body for endurance with activities like hiking, cardio, and strength training. Kilimanjaro is not a technical climb, but good physical condition is essential.

  • Proper Gear: Sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing for high altitudes, a good quality sleeping bag (especially for camping routes), and a daypack are essential. Some trekking companies offer gear rentals.

  • Gradual Acclimatization: Choose a route with a gradual ascent profile to allow your body to adjust to the decreasing oxygen levels at higher altitudes.

  • Experienced Guide: A qualified guide is highly recommended. They can provide medical support, manage the pace of the climb, ensure your safety, and offer assistance with acclimatization.

  • Positive Mental Attitude: Be prepared for challenging weather conditions and physical exertion. Determination and a positive mindset will go a long way on your climb.

Summit success rates for Kilimanjaro Climb Packages vary from 65% to 98%, depending on factors like route and acclimatization time.

Longer routes give your body more time to adjust to altitude, improving your chances. How well you handle altitude ultimately plays the biggest role in reaching the summit.

Basic camping toilets are available at campsites. Higher camps may have more basic options like digging holes. Always pack hand sanitizer and toilet wipes.

You can upgrade your Kilimanjaro climb with a private portable flush toilet, at an extra charge. Discuss this with our travel consultant when you book your Kilimanjaro climb.
